In demand as a conductor and a fierce advocate for new work, Mary Chun has collaborated with many composers of note such as John Adams, Libby Larsen and Tan Dun. Invited by the composer, she conducted the world premiere of John Adams’ hybrid opera I was Looking at the Ceiling and then I saw the Sky in Montreal, Paris and Hamburg. She also conducted the world premieres of Libby Larsen’s Every Man Jack, Mexican-American composer Guillermo Galindo experimental opera Decreation: Fight Cherries, Mort Garson and Joseph Graves’ music drama Revoco and Carla Lucero’s Wuornos, the tragic true tale of one the most notorious female serial killers in the country. Mary’s work on the premiere of Lucero’s second opera, Juana, was hailed as “one of the great glories” of the opera by LA Times critic Mark Swed. Her success with West Edge Opera’s provocative Powder Her Face was also met with national critical acclaim. She has conducted several tours of Carmen in Europe in addition to leading concerts in Belgium and the Czech Republic. Closer to home, she has conducted at City Opera in Vancouver, Hawaii Opera Theater, Lyric Opera of Cleveland, Opera Idaho, West Edge Opera, Pacific Repertory Opera, Texas Shakespeare Festival, Ballet San Joaquin, Mendocino Music Festival, Opera San Jose, Cinnabar Theater and the Reskin Theater in Chicago, among others.

Named in 2014, Mary is the Music Director/Supervisor of China’s Seven Ages Company. Under her direction, national Chinese touring productions of Avenue Q, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Man of La Mancha, Cinderella and Mozart, the Rock Opera have enjoyed explosive success throughout China in the last decade. 

Invited to join in 2000, Mary has led Earplay as Principal Conductor working with an exceptional cohort of musicians and composers specializing in new classical chamber music including electronica, experimental, world music and new media.

Mary is based in San Francisco where she resides with her drummer husband and is thrilled to conduct the world premiere of TOUCH in Helen Keller’s home state.
