Joseph Trafton returns to Bowling Green, where he grew up, after two decades conducting in Europe. He holds a Bachelor of Music in music theory and composition from the University of Miami and a Master of Music in conducting from the Eastman School of Music. For eight seasons he served as Music Director of the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra and Theater Hagen in Germany, leading symphonic concerts, opera, ballet and musical theater — a breadth of repertoire that few American conductors of his generation have had the chance to build. In 2025, Opernwelt magazine nominated him for its Conductor of the Year honor for his work in Hagen.

Tonight is his first concert as Music Director of Orchestra Kentucky, only the second person to hold that title in the organization's history; he succeeds founder Jeff Reed, who led the orchestra for twenty-six years. Trafton also serves as Music Director of the Ramsey Theatre Company, both organizations operating under the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center. His programming instinct — evident in tonight's collision of Vivaldi, Led Zeppelin and Mason Bates — runs toward the deliberate blending of genres, and toward the conviction that an orchestra is a place where a whole community can gather without first having to agree. "My hope and dream is that we all have different ideas, political views, religious backgrounds, musical tastes," he has said, "and we can discuss those things and broaden our horizons — and still experience great music together.”
