Canadian-American horn player Carys Sutherland began playing at the age of 10, and has since performed at major concert halls and festivals globally, including Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the BBC Proms. In February 2024, she became the new Principal Horn of Symphony Nova Scotia.

Carys has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the New World Symphony, Camerata New Jersey, and the Princeton Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared as a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra, and has won two YoungArts awards and the United States Navy Band Young Artist Solo Competition. Carys’ summers have been spent at the Music Academy of the West and the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, and she is excited to attend Marlboro Music Festival for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Carys earned a Bachelor of Music from the Juilliard School, where she studied under Julie Landsman and Jennifer Montone as a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. During her studies, she also held a Gluck Community Engagement Fellowship and a teaching fellowship in the Music Advancement Program. While based in New York, Carys served as Principal Horn of Symphony in C and also performed with the Handel and Haydn Society and Juilliard415 on period instruments.

Away from the horn, Carys enjoys writing program notes and regularly writes for Juilliard Orchestra concerts. In her free time, she enjoys reading, weightlifting, and trying new restaurants.
