Kailan Fournier moved to Halifax with her family at the start of high school. Not knowing many people and struggling to find a sense of home in a new place, she devoted her time to music and playing the clarinet. Kailan joined the NSYO in 2014, and this community became the home she was looking for. The NSYO was where her love for orchestra started, and where she decided that orchestral clarinet was the career she wanted to pursue.
She left Halifax in 2016 to pursue her undergraduate studies at The Glenn Gould School with Joaquin Valdepeñas, Principal Clarinet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She is now a Graduate Fellowship student at McGill University, studying with Todd Cope of the Montreal Symphony.
As a freelancer, Kailan has performed with professional orchestras such as Violons du Roy and the Hamilton Philharmonic. In 2018 and 2019, Kailan toured Europe and Canada, playing Principal Clarinet with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
Kailan is thrilled to be back with NSYO and spending some time in Halifax with her parents and her dog.
