Alex Yang

13-year-old Alex Yang is a grade nine student at the Halifax Grammar School and has been a student of Professor Lynn Stodola since 2015. 

In June 2019, he won First Place in both piano and violin (age 10 group) in the Canadian Music Competition (CMC) National Final in Calgary, Alberta, and was declared unanimously the overall Grand Prize winner for all instruments age 7 - 10.  He was chosen as “Favourite” in the 2020 CMC in the 11-14 years category of the Quebec and Maritimes region of Canada, and this year he was awarded first place in his age group.  

As the 2019 winner of the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, he was featured soloist for their Opening Concert of the 2019/2020 season, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and later appeared as soloist with the Canadian Sinfonietta (Toronto) as winner of their 2020 Young Artist Competition.  This year he will be a featured soloist with the Nova Sinfonia in their 2022/23 concert season performing Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2.  

Alex was invited to perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, having won the First prize and Exceptional Young Musician prize in the 2020 International Classical Music Competition. He also made his solo recital debut on Cecilia's 2020/21 concert series and was presented in recital as part of Musique Royale’s 36th Summer Festival in Tatamagouche last summer. 

In recent years, Alex has been a regular participant in the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival, winning the Gordon Murray Rising Star Award for four consecutive years, as well as the Halifax Ladies’ Music Club Junior Award, and the George Fleming Memorial Senior String Award for his outstanding performance in the festival. This year, Alex was awarded the Doctor Piano and Yamaha Rose Bowl and the prestigious Kiwanis President’s Cup. As this year’s National Finalist representing Nova Scotia, Alex was awarded the Grand Award in the 2022 Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF) as the winner, chosen from the First Place winners in seven disciplines by an internationally acclaimed panel of adjudicators.  

Alex has been an RCM Gold Medalist (Atlantic Region) in both Piano and Violin, finishing the RCM piano ARCT level with 92 percent when he was 12 years old. He is the winner of numerous Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers Association (NSRMTA) trophies and Scholarship Competitions in piano and violin. As one of the youngest Nova Scotia Talent Trust Scholarship recipients, he was invited perform a solo recital at the Lieutenant Governor’s House on their Music on Tuesday Series. Alex has been playing violin for 5 years, winning numerous awards and scholarships, and is a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra. Aside from music, he likes tennis, badminton and debating. He loves computer programming and making his own computer games.
