All of the Brandenburg Concertos are brilliant in different ways, but the Second Concerto, with its virtuoso trumpet is the most spectacular in sound. We are fortunate to live at a time when the art of playing baroque trumpets has been rediscovered. When Pablo Casals conducted this work at Prades in the 1940’s, he was forced to assign the trumpet part to a soprano saxophone, because no trumpeter could play it to his satisfaction.
