Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major
Composed: 1711-1720
Duration: 17 minutes

The Fourth Brandenburg Concerto uses a concertino group of two flutes and a violin; in this sense it is a concerto grosso with a small group of soloists (the concertino) contrasted with a string orchestra. The three solo parts are, however, not of equal prominence. The violinist needs to be a real virtuoso, but the flute parts are less demanding, filling a position somewhere intermediate between the concerto soloist and the orchestra. The opening movement is in a cheerful concertante style. In the following slow movement the soloists and the orchestra echo each other, the violin providing the bass of the concertino group. The work concludes with a fugal allegro.
