Written in 1878, Tchaikovsky's Souvenir d'un lieu cher or "memories of a dear place" was originally a collection of three pieces for violin and piano that was later arranged for violin and string orchestra by Alexandru Lascae.
The suite was born from Tchaikovsky's time at Brailivo, the country estate of his patroness Nadezhda von Meck, where he spent a number of weeks alone in the spring months of 1878 writing and composing music.
The first movement of the suite, Méditation, was intially intended to be the slow movement of his Violin Concerto, but Tchaikovsky later decided it wasn't the right fit and instead rewrote it for violin and piano.
The full suite was published in 1879, but there is no record of when it first premiered.
