FANTASY ON GEORGE GERSHWIN’S SONGS
Yuri Mayevsky (b. 1942)

The known facts are few about Russian pianist, composer and teacher Yuri Mayevsky. His publisher mentions studies in Moscow and St. Petersburg, at whose Conservatory Mayevsky taught for many years. He has also made at least one concert tour to the United States. An Honored Artist of Russia, he has transcribed and arranged many pieces for both students and professional pianists, including today’s idiomatic showpiece, the Fantasy on George Gershwin’s songs. Written in the grand tradition of 19th century piano fantasies, the work transforms a medley of favorite Gershwin melodies into a kaleidoscope of moods, from exuberant display to soulful introspection, with a touch of whimsy as the piece closes.
