ROMANCE, FOR CELLO AND PIANO, OP. 69

Composed 1894; 4 minutes

Fauré’s Romance began as a short Andante for cello and organ (or harmonium), later retitled by his publisher when he arranged it for piano. The manuscript shows block organ chords giving way to piano arpeggios as the piece transitioned from church to salon. The low, rising introduction reappears at the midpoint providing variety in texture from the melodic heart of the piece, which is a showcase for the cello’s tenor register.
