I HAVE A BONNET TRIMMED WITH BLUE
Herbert Hughes (b. Belfast, Ireland, August 16, 1882; d. London, England, May 1, 1937)

Hughes was a key figure in the early 20th century Irish folk-song revival. A composer, arranger, and founding director of the Irish Folk Song Society, he is best known for his multi-volume Irish Country Songs, which bring traditional melodies into the recital repertoire in refined yet idiomatic art-song settings. I have a bonnet trimmed with blue is a playful, flirty, circular little verse about dressing up and going out included in Irish Country Songs, Volume IV (1936). The song’s charm lies in its polka-like rhythm, repetition, and dance-swing.
