Radovan Vlatković
French Horn

One of the leading instrumentalists of his generation, Radovan Vlatković has traveled the globe performing extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher.

Among his many prestigious appointments, he has served as Principal Horn with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin (now Deutsches Symphonie Orchester), as well as previously serving on faculty at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Since 2000 he has held the Horn Chair “Canon” at the Queen Sofia School in Madrid.

Born in Zagreb, Vlatković completed his studies at the Zagreb Academy of Music and the Music Academy in Germany. He has received many first prizes in national and international competitions, including the Premio Ancona in 1979 and the ARD Competition in 1983 – the first to be awarded to a horn player in 14 years.

Vlatković has appeared as soloist with many distinguished symphony and chamber orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. He has premiered works by Elliott Carter, Sofia Gubaidulina and Heinz Holliger. In 2008 he premiered the Horn Concerto written for him by Penderecki with the Bremen Philharmonic. He regularly performs at Gidon Kremer’s Lockenhaus, Svyatoslav Richter’s December Evenings in Moscow, Rudolf Serkin’s Marlboro and András Schiff’s Mondsee, among others.

Vlatković has received the German Critics Award for several of his discs. His numerous recordings include Mozart and Strauss concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra, works by Saint-Saëns with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Britten Serenade, and concertos for two horns by Leopold Mozart and Fasch with Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. His recordings have been issued by EMI, DECCA, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon, among others.

In 2014 Vlatković was awarded an Honorary Membership of the Royal Academy of Music, an honor bestowed upon only 300 distinguished musicians worldwide.  He plays a full double horn Model 20 M by Paxman of London.
