Folk Electric

Scott Moore and Erica Pisaturo, the husband-and-wife team behind Folk Electric, describe their ambitious new work “Wayfaring Stranger” as “a genre-bending, multi-sensory adventure: a kaleidoscopic journey through time, sound, and imagination.” Comprising a stellar cast of musicians from as far away as North Carolina and Kentucky, the band will take over Rockport’s celebrated concert hall to perform their hour-long opus, then migrate to the third floor for an afterparty set of unplugged (but just as electrifying) music, while surrounded by an array of brand new Folk Electric-inspired paintings by Matthew Billey and Loren Doucette.

Back in his native Kentucky, Moore had successful stints as both a touring bluegrass musician—playing major festivals like Grey Fox and Rockygrass—and as a composer, with multiple ballet scores under his belt. Since moving to Gloucester in 2019, he has re-embraced his love for classical music, becoming Concertmaster of Lexington Symphony, Cape Ann Symphony, and Symphony by the Sea. Cape Ann audiences have gotten to know him through his eclectic programming and dynamic performances as Artist-in-Residence at the Annisquam Village Church.

But it was Pisaturo’s idea to weave together the various threads of both their successes into a new tapestry: traditional folk music’s primal joys, sorrows, and sense of timeless connection, combined with the couple’s affinity for rock-n-roll of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and the experimentation, color palette, finesse, and power of classical music. Thus, Folk Electric was born. Moore and Pisaturo have collaborated at every step along the way, including co-producing the upcoming record; and they are clearly excited about the future of the ever-evolving project.

“Erica and I are thrilled to take the stage with this group of world-class musician friends, many of whom are also on the upcoming Folk Electric record,” offers Moore. The band for this outing features visiting artists Tyler Ramsey (Tyler Ramsey, Band of Horses), Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne), and Dani Markham (Childish Gambino, Tune-Yards) as well as Cape Ann familiars like George Clements (The Clements Brothers, Lonely Heartstring Band) and Reneé Dupuis (What Time Is It Mr Fox?); plus Joey Thieman, Maggie Cerjan, and Lobster Cove String Quartet members Brandon White and Alex Fowler.

Moore and Pisaturo are still putting finishing touches on the debut Folk Electric record, which features an impressive array of guest artists—including singers Will Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), Mark Erelli, Carly Johnson, Dawn Landes, and Hayley Reardon; pianist Rachel Grimes; cellist Mike Block; drummer Ray Rizzo (Bob Weir); plus the aforementioned Hickman, Clements, Markham, and more. The pair hope to release the album later in 2025.

“Somewhere in the dreamtime, we encounter our archetypal Wayfarer,” writes Moore, “with whom we embark on a new chapter of the ongoing journey: over seas and up rivers, from the New World to the Old and back again, borne by our eternal vessel, the Present Moment, into the mirrored mysteries of the echoing past and the beckoning future.”
