Jonathan Warburton
bass trombone

As one of England’s most versatile and busiest bass trombonists on the music scene today, Jonathan Warburton is actively involved in a wide array of musical performances. After graduating from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a first class honors degree in bass trombone, he spent two years with the National Youth Wind Orchestra and also performed with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Keeping abreast with new material for bass trombone, Jonathan is an active member of the British Trombone Society where he regularly performs new pieces. Recent premieres performed have been by such composers as Gareth Wood (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Ted Watson, Chris Stearn, John Frith and Guy Woolfenden (Royal Shakespeare Company). Jonathan gave the U.K. premiere of Eric Ewazen’s Rhapsody for Bass Trombone and Strings as well as performing the European premiere of Mr. Ewazen’s Ballade. Collectively, Mr. Warburton has had over 30 original works written for him by composers such as John Frith, Tom Dossett, Dan Schnyder, Eric Ewazen, Mark Nightingale, Adam Gorb, Guy Woolfenden, Gareth Wood, Christopher Gordo, Juraj Filas, John Sweden, John Kenny and Peter Maunder. The most recent work is by Ken Davies, winner of the 2009 Eastern Trombone Workshop Composers’ Competition.

As an educator and leader in the newest concepts of teaching low brass performance, Jonathan has conducted master classes not only in his home country of England, but also in the United States, Australia, South Africa, and Canada by invitation from prominent universities and music conservatories such as Juilliard and Eastman School of Music. His classes and teaching methods are designed for students and performers of all ages and levels. Future plans for educational seminars are in the works for New Zealand and Spain.

Jonathan recently recorded his own solo CD on the Warwick label entitled, “Moving On,” of which he was also the executive producer. As a composer, he is published through Warwick Music, Cherry Classics and Wehr House Music. Some of his work is listed on England’s examination syllabuses. In his spare time, Jonathan is actively involved in gymnastics.
