This program is inspired by, well, me. Me is a pretty and queer thing and so the music I have chosen for this recital is as such. The first piece is vibrant, a showpiece for my favorite show animal: the clarinet. It is sometimes a delicious crash of lightning, and other times it taunts with far-off thunder. It is written well for the clarinet and a complete joy for me to play. The Open Sea is a piece I have written and did so with one central idea in mind: the lowest notes of any clarinet begin to sound like a honk from a boat. While listening I hope you will enjoy what is the adventures of two boys (one as the B-flat clarinet, the other the bass) discovering the sights of an open sea. Next is two pieces that are written for a beginning choir to sing in two-part harmony but will be played as a duet by me and my wonderful best friend and colleague Emma Shields on our primary woodwind instruments. We have studied these pieces in our Musicking class taught by the notable, fierce, and fabulous Dr. Hillary Ridgley. Finishing the program is Claribel, and it will surely leave you wondering: why in the world am I not playing the clarinet?
