Enfin je suis ici
Jules Massenet

At last I am here;

The house is deserted…

I managed to come back without being discovered

But what worry and fear!

Fleeing in the night through the terraces of the palace,

While running I lost my glass slipper!

Godmother! Godmother! Will you ever forgive me?

At the arranged hour I was fleeing… I was amid the dark avenues

Looming statues… what fright!

So big, so white, under the rays of the moon!

Their eyes without sight fixed themselves on me

They pointed at me with their finger, laughing at my plight!

What fright! You must have seen my distress

Godmother! Godmother! I did everything I could to keep my promise!

I kept running through the depths of the garden]

I got lost, and everything was dark

And I kept running always, always always!

Then, I stopped, suddenly, I was afraid.

I was afraid. Afraid of my shadow.

Scanning the horizons, fearing everywhere for betrayals,

I glide along the houses not daring to cross the square…

A great noise resounds and makes me freeze. Sinister shivers

It was the carillon in the belfry!

Comforting my heart it said to me in its language

It was saying to me: I am watching over you!

Take care courage! Courage! Come now! Courage!

Go!
