Hyphen is an exploration of how we view ourselves in relation to a larger contemporary American landscape. As an Asian American, I often struggle with living within two distinct cultures. Perhaps we all struggle to find a sense of belonging in today’s diverse society and question what a post-racial society may mean. For me, the hyphen both connects and separates my worlds. The projections by iconic video artist Nam June Paik are some of his earliest self-portraits, which similarly question his transnational identity.
