Max Bruch (1838–1920) wrote Romanze op. 85 for solo viola and orchestra and an arrangement of the work for violin later in his life. This piece was dedicated to French violist Maurice Vieux, who was the principal violist of the Paris Opéra; however, the piece was premiered by German violinist Willy Hess, a friend of Bruch’s. The piece exudes a sweet singing melody in the first theme then moves onto moving accompanimental line in the solo part of the second section. This piece showcases the sonorous and singing tone of the euphonium.
