Soprano Carly Baron is thrilled to be performing the role of Héloïse in Monsieur Petitpois achète un château in Shenandoah Conservatory’s production of The New World of Opera! She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance (Classical Voice), studying under Nancy Gustafson. Her doctoral research synthesizes effective approaches to performing for children, and analyzes how these approaches can be applied and tailored to operatic singing technique. She looks forward to sharing her culminating vocalist’s “guide” to the performance of opera for young audiences next semester! This season, along with Petitpois, Carly is debuting the role of Erica in the premiere of Salted Crème, a new chamber opera, as well as Lexi in the U.S. premiere of Back into the World, an opera for children by Hanbury and Groves. She is also singing Caroline Shaw’s Dolce Cantavi for the EDGE Ensemble’s Pulitzer Prize Composer Series, studying the role of Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, and covering the role of Mademoiselle le Pouponne in The New World of Opera’s very own, La Fille d'opéra.
Recent operatic credits include Countess Vampirella (Gothic Opera – devised work), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Despina (Così fan tutte) and Julie (Pacamambo – U.S. premiere). In addition to performing, Carly maintains an active voice and piano studio. She feels so grateful to have the opportunity to showcase this delightful, wacky and largely unknown work by Germaine Tailleferre, and thanks the all-star production team, as well as her family, friends, mentors and cat for their unwavering support!
