Pius Cheung is, perhaps, my favorite composer of marimba music. This etude, much like his other works, explores a deeply emotional and beautiful side of the marimba, rather than simply developing one musical technique like a traditional etude. I find Cheung’s music to be dark and somber in the most inspiring of ways. I’m constantly finding new nuances within the music, as both a performer and listener. Every time I listen to this piece, I am washed away to a place where it is just me and my memories. I hope this piece finds its way into your heart and takes you to a place of reflection, wherever it may be.
