These two movements, written by Ekhard Kopetzki, explore the versatility of the timpani and challenge the listener’s expectations of the drums. The first movement, Mountain Paths, while rhythmically dense, showcases the timpani’s ability to produce moving melodic lines. The second movement, Freedom Trail, expands upon the unique sounds that can be manipulated and created by the drums. The melodic and sonic exploration, combined with the unique extended techniques, reminds me of the true versatility and uniqueness that percussion holds. I find that this piece challenges the notion of timpani as a purely accompanimental instrument.
