Marimba Spiritual, written for Keiko Abe, was written about a famine in Africa the year before. This famine reminded Miki about his time as a Japanese civilian in World War II. The piece is divided into two movements, a requiem and a resurrection. The resurrection movement is an energetic collaboration between the soloist and three percussionists. The piece builds energy to a percussion soli, perhaps the most emotional part of the work. This work is one of, if not my most, favorite pieces of chamber percussion music. The rhythmic material is simple, yet intense in execution and performance. The piece pushes the soloist and percussionists to an explosive and rewarding finale.
