Being raised as a classical pianist, John always had a passion for classical music, which eventually led to his love for classical singing. Baritone John Tuvera Lim is a second-year student of Dr. Byron Jones pursuing a Master of Music in vocal performance at Shenandoah Conservatory. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor's in vocal performance and was awarded Outstanding Bachelor of Music Performance by the School of Music. His former teachers there were professors Shelby VanNordstrand and Alisa Belflower.
In the recent summer, John spent a month in Weimar, Germany, and made his debut playing the role of Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, where he sang for an audience of one thousand in Mühlhausen's town square. In past productions, John has played the roles of the Father in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, Barabashkin in Shostakovich's Moscow, Cheryomushki, Ted Hughes in a new work by Ella Marchment, Caged Birds, and has played as numerous characters in featured scenes from many operas and as choristers in productions with Opera Omaha.
This October, Mr. Tuvera Lim will tour Portugal and Spain with Shenandoah Conservatory's opera theatre, where he will sing as Polypheme in Händel's baroque opera Acis and Galatea. John is thrilled to perform on the Iberian Peninsula as this will be his first time visiting these countries. After his graduation in May, he hopes to continue his education to pursue his dream of being a professional opera performer.
John would like to thank all of his teachers, family, and friends for always supporting him as he makes his debut singing in concert with a live orchestra.
