by Gavin Barricklow

The reason the Schubert piece has its name is because it was composed for its namesake, the arpeggione. The arpeggione is a six stringed, fretted instrument tuned like a guitar, but it has a curved bridge so it is able to be played like a cello.

Schubert also died of syphilis, which my mother has always pointed out to me, so it is now my mission to say, “Schubert died of syphilis,” every time his name is mentioned.
