Skyy Carter is a mezzo-soprano from Newport News, Virginia. She is in her third year at Shenandoah University pursuing her bachelor’s degree in voice performance with the help of Dr. Fotina Nuemenko. While at Shenandoah, she has done a masterclass with world-renowned mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves. Skyy has also performed in multiple Shenandoah University productions such as A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten as a fairy, and Caged Birds a disciplinary project with works by Missy Mazzoli and Ratniece Claybird. While participating in Shenandoah University productions she has had the privilege to work with Shenandoah director of opera Ella Marchment, maestro Jan Wagner, coached by Wei-Han Wu, and Shenandoah University’s Shenandoah Voices choir director Richard W. Robbins, and in May 2024 Skyy was a mezzo-soprano soloist for the Winchester Coral for the Mozart Mass in C Major, KV.317. She has also opened for Vickie Winian with Shenandoah University’s Harambee gospel choir. Skyy also performed in Shenandoah’s production of Moscow, Cheryomushki by Dmitri Shostakovich, where she will portray the role of Kurochkina in May 2024. Skyy participated in the Virginia All-State choir in 2021 and she competed in Virginia NATS and received first place in spirituals and 3rd place for classical in 2024.
