Psallite
Michael Praetorius

Psallite, unigenito, Christo Dei Filio,
Redemptori Domino, puerulo, iacenti in praesepio.
Sing praises to the only-begotten, Christ the Son of God,
To the Redeemer, the Lord, the little boy, lying in the manger.

Ein kleines Kindelein liegt in dem Krippelein,
alle liebe Engelein dienen dem Kindelein
und singen ihm fein.
A little child lies in the crib,
All the dear angels serve the little child
And sweetly sing to him.

Michael Praetorius (1571–1621) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist, renowned for his contributions to music and his synthesis of Renaissance polyphony and emerging Baroque styles. Psallite, a jubilant Christmas motet, exemplifies his masterful blending of Latin and German texts—a hallmark of German music of the period.
