Eli is gone, but what does that mean? The city. Marcus. So many want Mr. Mano to take the cash settlement and move on, but can any sum of money really make up for the loss of a child? As we learn more about Eli’s disappearance and what really went down at the protest, we begin to see that there might be more to the story than meets the eye. The question is, will Mr. Mano learn the truth before he has managed to lose everything? Will the truth be enough?
Before experiencing Windfall, take some time to familiarize yourselves with the characters you are going to see on stage. As you watch, we invite you to keep in the mind the reflection questions at the end of this section.
The Characters
Eli is an activist. They are unafraid to use their voice and fight back. The problem is, where are they now? All we know as that an Officer hit them with a rubber pellet at a recent protest. Eli is presumed dead, but can we really know that for sure? There’s no body, but the city seems very insistent that we brush this under the rug and fast. Can Eli’s cause outlive their memory? Is that what everyone is so afraid of?
Henri ‘Mr. Mano' Tamaño is a parent. He’s grieving. His child, Eli, is gone, but can we really know what that means? The city seems insistent that he take a settlement and stop asking questions. They want to tie up loose ends. and Mr. Mano is an obstacle for which they do not have time. But can money really make up for the loss of a child? What is Mr. Mano to do in the face of this tragedy?
Marcus is a reminder. His father, Mr. Mano, is grieving. He clearly needs Marcus to push him in the right direction. Just take the settlement. If the government is offering you money, why wouldn’t you take it? But something isn’t quite right about Marcus. Who is he to Mr. Mano, and why is he so insistent?
Nurse is a good nurse. He’s not paid well for it, but he knows what he’s doing. Working in the coroner’s unit for as long as he has, you start to believe you have seen it all. Sometimes bodies go missing, and that’s just part of the game. But something is different about Eli’s situation. The Nurse needs to be clear and follow protocol, but is there still a way that he can help?
Officer is sorry. He was working the detail the night of the protest. He saw all the people and got scared. No one was listening and the Officer shot a rubber bullet through the air. When it hits a protestor in the chest, something doesn’t quite seem right. All it was meant to do what scare them. Send them home. But Eli isn’t getting up.
First Lady/ Miss Second / The Last One are the strangers. The mysterious government officials who visit Mr. Mano and insist that he take the settlement. Each has a singular goal, and each seems more threatening than the last. They all have a line they are not willing to cross on behalf of the city. As the threats intensify, it becomes clear that Mr. Mano will never quite be rid of these people. But at the end of the day, are they just doing their jobs? What responsibility do they have and to whom?
