Treasures of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau Period
From The Denis Conley Estate

I chose art from the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods as this style of art was very popular both in Europe and the United States during the time frame depicted in "Cabaret."

I want to thank Doug Hicks, the Executor of the Denis Conley Estate, for his invaluable assistance in providing the exquisite works on display. I am privileged to honor Denis Conley and keep his memory alive through this exhibit.

Denis Conley was a patron and lover of all the arts. He was well known in the art world for his expertise in late 19th-century and early 20th-century art, specifically Art Deco, and to a slightly lesser extent, Art Nouveau. He advised some of the most prominent collectors in the area, including Mary Schiller Myers. The Denis Conley Gallery was a mainstay in Ohio for over 40 years. Many museums (including the Akron Art Museum) and galleries throughout the United States depended on him for his expertise in the valuation and provenance of artworks.

Denis was also a renowned expert on French "pochoirs," a lush stenciling technique that reached its zenith in 1920's Paris. Before his untimely death in 2011, he had discovered that high-end inkjet prints were, in essence, a contemporary form of "pochoir." He then began reproducing his own large collection of original Art Deco pochoirs in a series of digital prints, both as framed prints and as cards.

In addition to his expertise in the world of visual arts, Denis majored in music at The University of Akron and had a radio program on WAUP, the educational radio broadcasting service of the University. He hosted the "Friday Night at the Opera" program.

Doug Hicks first met Denis in the fall of 1975.  As a pianist, Doug was recommended to Conley as an accompanist for his many opera performances in the area.  Their friendship continued until Denis's death.

Initially, Doug Hicks was going to offer the works in this exhibit for sale. However, upon reflection, he has decided that he would like to keep The Denis Conley Estate intact. So, in keeping with that decision, the art work in this display is not for sale.
