Showcasing and Celebrating Akron's Own " Famous Four" Musical Groups
Newark, New Jersey has Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to claim as musical heroes. "Jersey Boys" explores the secret of a 40-year friendship as the foursome work their way from the streets of New Jersey to the heights of stardom.
This is an opportunity for The Harris Family Gallery to showcase and celebrate four of the most well-known and influential musical groups in the Akron area who are still performing. They are: The Black Keys, Devo, 15-60-75-The Numbers Band, and
Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders.
I wanted to frame up albums from those groups.
I also wanted to feature any musicians from those groups who are also visual artists. Three of the five members of 15-60-75-The Numbers Band are also visual artists: Robert Kidney, Jack Kidney, and Terry Hynde. They were the most responsive to my request.
Terry Hynde is the brother of Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. I knew Chrissie Hynde was a visual artist, but I had no way to access her art. Fortunately, Terry had a beautiful book, "Adding The Blue" by Chrissie Hynde, published in 2016, which contained reproductions of Chrissie Hynde's paintings. Terry graciously loaned it to me, and we were able to make copies of four of her paintings to add to the exhibit.
Thanks, thanks, and ever thanks to all those who helped make this possible: James Carney, 15-60-75-The Numbers Band, Dave Ignizio, owner of Square Records, Jason Noble, owner of Groove Records; Randy Kozulla, Mary Plazo, Division Manager of the Special Collections Division at the Akron Summit County Public Library; and Keith Campbell, Director of Audience Development at Weathervane. It takes a village.
Some of the albums will be for sale after April 5, 2025, either at Groove Records, Cuyahoga Falls, or Square Records, Highland Square. Check the title cards for details.
