Sherlock Holmes says something in the beginning of this play that I kept coming back to as we worked on this show:
"My mind is like a racing engine, tearing itself to pieces because it is not connected up with the work for which it was built."
I think we’ve all felt this before. Maybe not to the extent of Sherlock, because who among us has his complexity of mind and thought? But I bet we’ve felt a restlessness brought about by a lack of purpose, the feeling that we are not doing the thing we were built to do, the thing that only we can contribute to the world.
Shortly after Sherlock says the words above, Lillie Langtry and Oscar Wilde bound through the door of 221b Baker Street and sweep Sherlock and Watson up in a whirlwind case of mystery, danger, disguise, and monarchy. Holmes, the only person on earth who can solve this mystery, is connected back up with the work for which he was built. His brain is fully engaged, and he’s doing exactly what he loves the most. He’s unstoppable.
Having the opportunity to be in the room with people who are “connected up with the work for which they were built” is one of the things I love best about Barter. Artists onstage, backstage, in the shops designing and building the world—everyone working together towards a common goal and thriving in deep, focused creation.
