At the beginning of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge scolds his nephew Fred for celebrating Christmas, insisting he does not profit from the holiday. In response, Fred articulates what Christmas means to him:
“I have always thought of Christmas time…as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!”
Though Fred does not profit in the material sense, his heart and spirit gain much. He experiences Christmas as a time of renewed generosity and compassion for his fellow man. We journey with Scrooge as he learns this lesson for himself and witness the walls around his heart crumble away. Perhaps we can imagine what our own Ghosts of Past, Present, and Future would reveal to us, and like Scrooge, receive the gift of knowing this:
Change is possible.
It is never too late.
New paths will unfold themselves to you, if only you have the courage to take them.
