Director's Note

We welcome you to this Christmas celebration that is Go Tell It On the Mountain.

Christmas is a time when we often look back and recall those who came before us. Our families, friends who have moved on or, are no longer with us. It is a time to take in the past and look to the future. One year ends, another begins.

All of the characters you will meet here today are looking back and looking forward. They seem to be reaching for something. Sometimes they know what they are reaching for and sometimes they do not know what they are reaching for but they are reaching for it anyway. One of the characters you will meet today uses the word, “yearning” to describe the feeling.

The mountains of Appalachia teem with the past. And so it is the same for the people who live here. Those who came before us stand beside us and send us into the future. We know that we are not the first in our line to have that “yearning” feeling we get when we look out at these mountains; mountains described by one of our characters as “Green waves on an ocean of earth, ancient and mysterious.” The “ancient” past compels us and the “mysterious” future entices us and we feel that yearning.

A merry Appalachian Christmas to all.
