Thurgood Marshall’s story begins and ends with hope and possibility. Throughout his distinguished career, as a litigator, judge, and the first African American Justice on the United States Supreme Court, he dedicated himself to the advancement and protection of the civil rights of all Americans.
Today, foundational precedents that Justice Marshall supported, authored, or upheld are being revisited and, in some cases, overturned. These shifts reflect ongoing changes in how the law is interpreted in relation to the values expressed in the Fourteenth Amendment.
As Justice Marshall said, “the whole thrust of our constitution is people to people, when people are treated with respect and decency, they will join together to form a more perfect union.” God willing, there is still hope for “the land that never has been yet, and yet must be, the land where everyman is free.”
