Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl, moves to the quiet town of Avonlea, and breathes life into every corner of her new home and community. One of my favorite passages in the classic novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery describes the transformation of Anne’s bedroom since she first arrived:
“In all essential respects the little gable chamber was unchanged. The walls were as white, the pincushion as hard, the chairs as stiffly and yellowly upright as ever. Yet the whole character of the room was altered. It was full of a new vital, pulsing personality that seemed to pervade it and to be quite independent of schoolgirl books and dresses and ribbons, and even of the cracked blue jug full of apple blossoms on the table. It was as if all the dreams, sleeping and waking, of its vivid occupant had taken a visible although immaterial form and had tapestried the bare room with splendid filmy tissues of rainbow and moonshine.”
Despite the many difficulties in her past, Anne chooses to notice the possibility each day holds. The mundane turns to magic. Her vivacity is contagious; so much so that the seemingly most immovable people shift in her wake. Matthew and Marilla, set in their ways for the better half of a century, transform before our very eyes. Matthew, a reclusive farmer, is described as “waking up after being asleep for over sixty years.” Marilla, once hard as steel, tells Anne “I feel as if you’d given me new life.”
In a world that is becoming increasingly automated, Anne invites us to slow down and show up. To create room for our own scope of imagination. To imagine and subsequently create a life that is more vibrant and rich. Perhaps this story can provide a seed of hope, a reminder of the beauty and possibility all around us, if only we open our eyes and see it.
