I find that directing a play is often like putting together a puzzle. At the first rehearsal, we dump all the pieces out onto the table and then spend the rest of the rehearsal period putting the puzzle together.
Murder for Two is unlike anything I’ve ever worked on. Two actors playing multiple roles, as well as the piano, while solving a murder at the same time?! How is this going to work?
As we got into rehearsals, I realized it works the way every play works: collaboration. We talked, we engaged our imaginations, we sang, played piano, but mostly…we laughed. And slowly but surely, the pieces of the puzzle began to take shape.
As we moved closer to performance, I kept feeling like we’re close, but it feels like a piece is missing. We kept trying different things: was it the lights? The sound? The blocking? Until finally I realized what the missing piece was: it’s you—our audience. It’s your imagination, spirit and willingness to come along for the ride that completes this puzzle!
So get ready for an evening of mystery and, of course, mayhem. And it is my hope that you’ll have as much fun watching Murder for Two as we have performing it!
