DIRECTOR'S NOTES
I love the feeling you get when something you have seen your whole life suddenly looks new to you. It is magic when an idea or a story is transformed by a new perspective. It's something I love about this script of Dracula. Kate Hamill honors the story we all know, and also shows us that the everyday can be more exciting, scarier, and more fun than we imagined. We've had a ball surprising ourselves with these characters and digging into the juxtapositions of the story. The most thrilling moments have been when we find that the light and the dark are right up next to each other: the funny and the frightening, the sacred and profane, the serious and the ridiculous, life and death...

Those juxtapositions mark so much of my favorite art. Chiaroscuro is the Italian descriptor: Chiaro meaning light; oscuro meaning darkness. Caravaggio made it famous in paintings with the dramatic beauty of a dark canvas lifting the one person who was illuminated. Any dancer will tell you that there is depth in your highest leaps, and that you must lift up to plié downwards. Singing a high note has to have equal depth to sustain it. In this case, the script has a way of celebrating chiaroscuro in a way that doesn't take itself too seriously.

So come into the dark with us, and let's find the light together.
