The Twelve Dates of Christmas

by Ginna Hoben

Mary loves the holidays. Even when her fiancé calls to say he’s sick and can’t come to Thanksgiving with her family, she makes the best of the day and snuggles in to watch the Macy’s parade on TV. But when the parade camera zooms in on her fiancé kissing another woman, Mary’s holidays take a turn for the ridiculous. What follows is a year of hilarious and strange dates that bring Mary back around to the next holiday season wiser, happier, and more herself than ever before.

Director's Notes

Finding love takes guts. As one of the characters in this play so wisely puts it, “…it would be a lot easier if love were in the hands of destiny. We wouldn’t have to take any risks….”

It’s hard to put yourself out there. Especially during the holidays. I once went on a date with a man who showed up in a clown costume. Makeup, red nose, big shoes - everything. We’ve all had a bad experience on a date, or left one thinking there was a spark, only to find out that the other person just wasn’t that into us. Yet even with the heartaches, the embarrassments, and the squeaky red noses, we cheer for people like Mary. We cringe, we laugh, and we take these risks, hoping that two human beings can connect.

To those of you cozied up in your car with that special someone, to those of you longing to meet someone new, and to those of you (bless you) who can look in the mirror and say “you complete me” --- Happy holidays from your friends at Barter. May we all gain the courage to find what we’re looking for this holiday season.
