Becky has worked all her life to get out of the mountains. Then her grandmother Maud decides to sell the family farm, forcing Becky to confront who she is and who she wants to be. This musical fable investigates the past and the present, revealing “what might have been” and “what still might be.” A story of love, longing, and second chances set in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains.
"The main character in our play, Maud Muller Cassell, speaks these words after taking a drink from an Appalachian mountain spring: “Oh, Lord, this water...”.
The Appalachians. There is magic in these mountains. The way the mist lays softly over the hills in the early morning light. Magic. The vast archives of art and music and literature that rose from the red clay of Appalachia. How is such a thing possible? Magic. There must be magic in these mountains.
If you don’t know what I am talking about ... just do this: put in a hard four hours of manual labor on a hot and humid, Appalachian, summer day. And then, find a mountain spring. Drink the water. You’ll see what I mean."
