Director's Note

If you haven’t seen the movie, I envy you that you get to see it for the first time. I believe I have watched the movie more than any of my other favorites.

I was hesitant to work on a play of the same title, since I found myself to be so very dedicated to the movie. I was worried that we could never live up to the expectations that come with a title that means so very much to so many people, myself included. I was wrong to worry.

Yes, there are many moments in the adaptation that differ from the film. But the important things about the movie are just as important here. To say it in poetic language: the heart of the story lives in this piece of theatre.

The heart. The thing that makes everything else in the body work. Somewhere inside of me I realize that we - those who created this piece of theatre - have transplanted the heart from one physical form to another. Of course it is going to differ from the movie, it is a different form altogether. In fact, the “fun” part of working on this play was to give it a new form while keeping that heart beating. Whenever there was a question... “How do we solve a problem that is particular to adapting this work from one medium to another?” The answer: listen for that heartbeat. Every time I listen for it, I can hear it. And it tells where to go and what to do.
