A skeleton crew is the minimum number of personnel needed to operate and maintain an item – such as a business, organization, or ship – at its most simple operating requirements. Skeleton crews are often utilized during an emergency and are meant to keep an item's vital functions operating. In this story the Skeleton Crew is one of the last standing automobile plants of the city of Detroit, Michigan.
Detroit, Michigan has been long known as the automobile capital of the world. After years of economic challenges, Detroit went from being the number 4 largest city in the nation to becoming the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy in 2013, following the Great Recession in 2008.
I believe there is an immense importance in seeing how the economy affects a hardworking, blue collar community such as the auto-plant workers of Detroit. The experiences of the characters in Skeleton Crew can be applied to many industry towns in America that struggled through the Great Recession of the 2000s and even today following the Covid-19 pandemic.
For me, this story hits home, as I am from Flint, MI, known as the vehicle city and birthplace of General Motors. My family has worked within four generations in the auto manufacturing business from the 1950s and currently ongoing. Being able to see versions of my family history and identify with the characters and their stories is something that I’m super excited about for the future of American Theatre. I think it goes a long way for all communities to see work such as Dominique Morisseau’s impact on how through all the politics, racial battles, struggles and triumphs, we are all human, out to make a living utilizing the resources that we are given, as best as we can given the circumstances. As the character Shanita mentions at the top of Act 2, at the end of the day the world will be a better place, if we just “MERGE.”
