Previously on Blithe Spirit...

While visiting his country home in Kent, writer Charles Condomine invites Madame Arcati, a local medium, to conduct a séance for a small group. Charles, who is conducting research for a new book, is a skeptic. But then, to his great surprise and agitation, the ghost of his first wife Elvira appears to him. No one else can see the ghost, including his sensible second wife Ruth, who thinks Charles is purposely tormenting her. Elvira revels in causing chaos, and her plot to have Charles join her (aka, kill him) goes awry and kills Ruth instead. Enraged, Ruth joins Elvira as a ghost in the house. Madame Arcati returns to send both ghosts back to the Other Side, but has she been successful? After insulting his late wives in case they can hear him, Charles flees the house to travel. As soon as he leaves, the unseen ghosts--which are most definitely still in residence--wreak havoc.

Kindred Spirits starts 12 years after the events of Blithe Spirit.

Recap written by Alice Scovell

Elvira

Ruth

What inspired you to write a sequel to Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit?

I grew up loving classic British comedies by Wilde, Coward, and Shakespeare. When I started writing plays, I was inspired those giants' humor, heightened language, and memorable characters. After I wrote my sequel The Rewards of Being Frank (which had its 2023 Rolling World Premiere at CSC!), I decided my next challenge would be Coward's delightful Blithe Spirit. I love the comedic riches of ghosts wreaking havoc in a dull Kent home. And I was thrilled that the sequel lent itself to a cast of six female actors and one male. In classic theater, men almost always outnumber women on stage.

Blithe Spirit is a classic comedy with a distinct tone and style. How do you balance paying homage to Coward's original work while infusing your own unique voice and vision into Kindred Spirits?

Because Coward is a giant, I wanted to be respectful of the world he created, especially the rules regarding ghosts. I preserved four of of Coward's memorable characters, including the iconic psychic Madame Arcati, and added three characters of my own. Coward famously wrote Blithe Spirit to entertain his fellow countrymen during the war (1941). I wanted to do more than entertain, and have added a feminist message which, I suspect, would sit well with Coward. Because not everyone knows Blithe Spirit, I wanted to create a work that could stand on its own. I call it "a sequel that is equal."

Blithe Spirit has been adapted into various mediums over the years, including film. How does writing a sequel differ from adaptation?

When writing an adaptation--especially of a well-known and well-loved work--it's important to be true to the original script's "blithe spirit." But a sequel allows--in fact demands--that the characters grow and change with the passage of time (in this case, twelve years).

What do you hope audiences will take away from Kindred Spirits?

I hope that those who love Blithe Spirit will be happy to spend more time with its iconic characters. And those who don't know Blithe Spirit will be inspired by Kindred Spirits to acquaint themselves with the original.  I hope that people will laugh, and also that they'll think about the proper pairing of couples and the hazards of systemic patriarchy.

As a playwright, what challenges did you encounter during the creative process of writing Kindred Spirits, and how did you overcome them?

While I didn't write Kindred Spirits in six days--as Coward famously wrote Blithe Spirit--I had a lot of fun writing the script. My main challenge was finding the time to finish. I had started before the CSC/NY Classical production of The Rewards of Being Frank and had to wait until the run was over to get back to work. Luckily, I had left myself copious notes. And maybe a ghost or two whispered in my ear.
