Produced in Partnership with Merrimack Repertory Theatre

"Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is produced in partnership with Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) and will travel to Lowell, MA, for a run following this production. MRT, celebrating 46 years, is the Merrimack Valley’s professional theater and produces seven works annually in the 279-seat Nancy L. Donahue Theatre at Liberty Hall. Led by Executive Artistic Director Courtney Sale, MRT focuses on new and contemporary plays that engage and enrich the community. Mary Shelley
Author

Mary Godwin Shelley (1797-1851) was an English writer credited for the creation of the Science Fiction Genre with her groundbreaking novel Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus. Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein in 1816 after a competition between herself, her partner, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron over who could write the best horror story. Mary’s life was marked by tragedy, including the deaths of three of her children and Percy’s drowning in 1822. She dedicated the rest of her life to promoting Percy’s work in his memory as well as continuing her literary pursuits.

1818

  • Mary Shelley anonymously publishes Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus at 20 years old.

1831

  • Mary Shelley publishes a revised version of the original Frankenstein, now with herself listed as the author.

1910

  • A silent short film adaptation of Frankenstein, produced by Thomas Edison, is released. Once considered lost, the original film can now be found on YouTube after being found and restored by the Library of Congress in 2018.

1931

  • Universal Pictures releases Frankenstein with Boris Karloff playing the creature. This iconic film established the modern depiction of Frankenstein’s Monster. The film was a hit, spawning multiple sequels such as Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, and more!

1964-1966

  • The classic sitcom The Munsters airs on CBS. Frankenstein’s Monster, named Herman Munster, is the father of a family full of iconic movie monsters. The show ran for 2 years and has had multiple reboots since!

1974

  • Mel Brooks directs Young Frankenstein. This comedic interpretation of Frankenstein, starred and co-written by Gene Wilder, was later adapted into a musical in 2007.

2012

  • Frankenstein enters the world of animation with Hotel Transylvania and Frankenweenie both premiering in 2012. This more family-friendly approach to the monster has lasted for years in Hotel Transylvania’s many sequels!

2019

  • The Lookingglass Theatre Company presents David Catlin’s Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This adaptation tells not only the story of the original novel but also the story of its creation. Witness this fresh take on the classic tale come to life tonight at Cincy Shakes!

Today

  • After 200 years, the story of Frankenstein is still inspiring artists! Poor Things (2023) and Lisa Frankenstein (2024) depict themes from Mary Shelley’s original work, and a new adaptation directed by Guillermo Del Toro is set to release in 2025!

Producing productions in partnership like this is cost-effective, helping theaters streamline operations, maximize budgets, and deliver high-quality performances to a wider audience.
