A Note from the Director, Christopher V. Edwards
Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play is a tight, propulsive whodunit set among Black soldiers on a segregated Louisiana Army base in 1944. The mystery is the engine, but the thing that lands in the gut is how racism—both from the outside and turned inward—warps identity, friendship, and whole communities, harming black and white folks alike. As the son of a man who made a career in the military, and as a military brat myself, the world of this play feels personal: the rhythm of drill, the weight of hierarchy, the pride in the uniform, and the cost that comes with all of it.
First produced by the Negro Ensemble Company in 1981, A Soldier’s Play was considered too polarizing for Broadway because it refuses to look away from the realities of American racism, both institutional and internalized. It later won the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which tells you something about its power and urgency. Fuller sets his story near the end of the war, when Black soldiers were fighting for freedoms overseas that they were systematically denied at home, sharpening the play’s questions about patriotism, justice, and belonging.
In the rehearsal room at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, the company and I are leaning into those fault lines: loyalty versus betrayal, pride versus self-loathing, service versus erasure. At times the play feels like a courtroom drama smashed up against a slice-of-life portrait of military culture. The Black soldiers onstage live in a world where the enemy isn’t only in Germany, Japan, or Italy; it’s also on their own base, in the chain of command, and sometimes lodged in their own minds. My hope is that audiences will sit with those uncomfortable truths about how white supremacy distorts human relationships—even among people who wear the same uniform and fight for the same flag.
This production is an invitation to see these men in full dimension: as soldiers, yes, but also as sons, dreamers, rivals, and brothers trying to survive an impossible position. In telling their story, we honor their service while refusing to look away from the contradictions at the heart of the country they swore to defend.
A Soldier’s Play is set on a segregated U.S. Army base during World War II, a setting defined by structure, hierarchy, and strict codes of behavior. Discover more about the Drill & Ceremony from our Military Consultant, Keisha L. Kemper.
Military Drill:
Military Drill is designed to produce uniformity and structure. A soldier’s response to the commands may seem simple, but it requires specific, precise, and practiced movements. Drill begins with the Position of Attention. Soldiers stand with heels together at a 45-degree angle, bodies upright, eyes forward, and hands in fists at their sides. Soldiers can then be instructed to assume Parade Rest, where the feet are set apart and hands placed behind the back, or At Ease, which allows limited movement while remaining silent. The command As You Were allows soldiers to resume a previous rest position or activity.
Saluting:
The hand salute is a highly regulated symbol of military respect, rooted in centuries of tradition. It acknowledges rank and authority and is meant to express mutual honor among service members. The salute is simple and dignified but carries great significance. It is a time-honored demonstration of courtesy among all military personnel that expresses mutual respect and pride in the service. Soldiers are required to salute when a subordinate encounters a superior officer, during official reports, and when assuming or relinquishing control of a formation, with the method of saluting varying depending on headgear and glasses.
Rank:
The U.S. Army operates under a clearly defined rank system, which determines authority, responsibility, and protocol. Rank dictates who gives orders, who salutes whom, and how soldiers address one another. Understanding rank helps clarify interactions between characters throughout the play. Below is the rank order, from highest to lowest, for characters in A Soldier’s Play:
- Captain (Capt)
- Lieutenant (Lt)
- Technical Sergeant (Tech Sgt)
- Corporal (Corp)
- Private (Pvt)
