SPOILER ALERT! Do not read if you prefer to be surprised by the production.

Othello the Moor, a general employed by the Venetian state, has secretly married Desdemona, the daughter of the senator Brabantio.

Daughter Disowned

Iago, a lower-ranking officer, nursing resentment against Othello, enlists the help of Roderigo, a disappointed suitor of Desdemona. Iago and Roderigo wake Brabantio in the middle of the night with the news of his daughter's elopement. Brabantio takes the case to the senate where, learning that she has married Othello of her own accord, he disowns his daughter. Othello is immediately ordered to the Venetian colony of Cyprus to repel a threatening Turkish invasion. Desdemona sails with her husband, taking with them her companion Emilia, who is also Iago's wife, and Othello's lieutenant Michael Cassio, newly-promoted instead of Iago.

Suspicion Grows

Once in Cyprus, Iago plants the suspicion in Othello's mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio. He engineers a drunken brawl for which Cassio is blamed and dismissed by Othello. Desdemona intervenes on Cassio's behalf but her pleas to Othello for his reinstatement simply convince Othello further that Cassio is her lover.

The Plot Unravels

Iago acquires a treasured handkerchief given to Desdemona by Othello as sacred token of his love for her, and uses it as 'proof' of the affair. Increasingly maddened by jealousy, Othello orders Iago to kill Cassio and smothers Desdemona himself. Emilia discloses her husband's plot and Othello, tormented by grief and remorse, kills himself. Iago, after murdering his own wife, is left to the justice of the Venetian state.

Sourced from the Royal Shakespeare Company

When I was asked to direct Othello, I was inspired by the opportunity to share with audiences an experience that would more closely resemble that of an Elizabethan theatre audience. European productions of Othello marked the beginning of the prominent practice of using blackface to portray characters of African or Middle Eastern descent. While an African American actor, Sylvester Little, is playing the title role, I knew that this production of Othello needed to remind its audience of this old and now considered problematic tradition, in order for it to feel impactful and highlight race or “otherness” as a theme. Of course, I did not want to subject Little to have to wear blackface, the role of Othello is complicated enough. I came to a compromise; a choice that is perhaps more artistic and thought-provoking than just asking Little to cover his face in soot. Iago, instead, throws a blackface party and Clown (played by a Black actor) dons the iconic “tears of a clown” white face.

I use masks in this production of Othello as imagery to represent disguising one’s true feelings, identity, intentions and subconscious biases. I believe we all wear masks. We wear masks to fit in when we feel that we are standing out. We wear literal masks, like make-up. We wear abstract masks, like laughing politely when we do not think something is funny. I believe that wearing a mask for Black folks in our society can also be thought of as “double consciousness”, which is a phrase coined by W.E.B DuBois, referring to Black people viewing ourselves through our own eyes and through White people’s eyes simultaneously. I do not think it possible that Shakespeare had it in his mind when writing the character of Othello, that he had this heightened sense of awareness of his Blackness. Othello does not mention his race until act III of the play; “haply that I am black.” What Shakespeare did, however, have in mind was that the actor playing the role would be a White man in blackface; a literal mask, which hides what truly lives underneath what Iago calls “a free and open nature.”

In such unsettling times, when facts are misconstrued and reality is disillusioned, it is difficult to discover truth. Some of us are wearing masks to survive. Some of us are wearing masks to wreak havoc. I hope the audience will leave this production of Othello with a desire to discover truth that comes from facts and facts that come from unmasked sources.
