The story of Emma is one of love in all its forms, friendship, community, coming of age, and of satirical commentary on classism. Jane Austen wraps all of these themes up into an old timey, good, and trashy romance novel. I refer to it as a “trashy romance novel” because on the surface, the plot is not about anything of importance. Austen herself described her novel’s subject as “three or four families in a country village.” It is not at all revolutionary in plot development, but certainly ground-breaking in its form, with the novel’s title character telling the story from her own perspective and voice. It instantly gratifies the reader’s appetite for hot gossip as drama unfolds for upper class society, luxurious imagery, and attractive characters flirting with hopes of falling in love at every turn. There are no surprisingly serious or tragic turns in the end. The story is a crowd pleaser; no different than When Harry Met Sally, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Notebook, Love Jones, Love is Blind, Love Island, or any other generational pop culture romantic comedy or love story. What is at the heart of these stories, and I believe why we all love them, is the human desire to love and be loved in the most gratifying way, which is when love is compatible and unconditional. Austen’s novel captures this, making its subject matter of upmost importance indeed!

Kate Hamill did not have much work to do in adapting a novel that is perfectly entertaining and engaging on its own. I think what Hamill’s adaptation does do, is expand Austen’s subtle wit into overt shenanigans, with characters who are larger than life, never concealing any sub-text. I struggled for weeks to answer the question of why Hamill would do this? Save a feminist speech or two from Emma, Hamill does not deviate from the novel’s plot much at all. So why adapt the story at all? I answered my own question with a question: Why not? Why not re-imagine such compelling characters in such a beautiful world? Why not bring such a world to life on stage? Asking myself “why not” encouraged artistic freedom to follow through with a concept that rang true to me. Artistic freedom is what gave Shonda Rhimes the inspiration to create Bridgerton, a massively popular TV series that is a re-imagining of regency England, that I believe rings true to her artistic sensibilities. Hamill’s adaptation empowers me to re-imagine the world of the novel in any time and setting that I please. So, I am proud to share with audiences a big, grand, and pink production of Kate Hamill’s Emma, that showcases a picture of the Black elite.

The Black elite refers to a historically exclusive, wealthy, and educated upper-class tier of African Americans, existing in northern cities in America during the “Gilded Age” (approx. 1870 – 1900). Also referred to as the “colored aristocracy,” this group was historically made up of free born Blacks. Jane Austen’s world is obviously British, but Hamill’s adaptation being a satire of the novel gives it a more contemporary American feel. The play makes the novel into a farce. The British accents, biscuits, and balls, are all costume and set dressing for a make-believe fantasy of regency England. Hamill’s Emma character breaks the fourth wall, directly addressing her audience, to honor Austen’s form. In doing this, the play takes us not only in and out of Emma’s mind, but also in and out of time and setting; creating more distance between historical accuracy and fantasy.

I am grateful to Kate Hamill for offering us an adaptation that allows for artistic freedom and play. I have layered the contemporary parts of the play with glimpses of modern Black culture, including string quartet versions of hip hop and R&B classics, the tradition of line dancing at large celebratory gatherings, and referencing famously comedic moments in Black romantic comedies. My responsibility as an artist is to create art that resonates with, educates, and inspires my community. In that endeavor, it is my hope that audiences will appreciate experiencing Black joy and beauty, in addition to the witty and feminine voices of both Jane Austen and Kate Hamill.
