Learn more about Dogberry and Verges are Scared from the playwrights, Michael Doherty and Will Mobley.

What inspired you to create Dogberry and Verges are Scared? Why Dogberry and Verges?

MIKE: I was playing Dogberry and Will was playing Verges in a regional production of Much Ado About Nothing. We spent a lot of time backstage acting out different scenarios as our characters. As odd as that sounds, we actually fell in love with the idea of these two dumb, dumb idiots having a whole separate journey outside of, but connected to, Much Ado.

WILL: As we started working on it, we realized they fundamentally shape the story of Much Ado and we thought it could be interesting to explore that more and to potentially reframe some of the trickier parts of Much Ado. Specifically, WHY DOES HERO GET BACK WITH CLAUDIO. I mean, come on, girl!

MIKE: Sorry if that's a spoiler for anyone.

What is it like writing as a team?

WILL: It's been amazing. Mike and I are both actors by trade so we were kind of figuring out how to write a play together. Our early process was just long sessions of trying to make each other laugh which is the best thing in the world but then you have to turn that into a story with structure.

MIKE: We united so much in what our sense of the play was that it has felt like we’ve always had a magnetic north to guide us. At times it can feel hard to compromise on a line or idea… or semicolon, but the ultimate agreement we reach is always clearer, deeper, and funnier than what came before.

WILL: It was a challenge but we really fell in love with the process and we’ve already got our sights set on our next play.

How has the journey from Philly Fringe to Cincinnati to Edinburgh Fringe been for you both?

MIKE: It's been a whirlwind! As playwrights we feel incredibly lucky to get a chance to make changes to the play and make it better. We had something that felt very complete going into Philly, and it’s only gotten cleaner and more detailed since. We’re excited to share something very polished in Scotland.

WILL: As producers we've had to really stretch ourselves and take on responsibilities that are totally foreign to us, but the entire process has been so rewarding. We couldn't have done it without the support of the amazing folks at Cincy Shakes!

What's your favorite line in the play?

MIKE: Hard to pick a favorite line, but my favorite moment might be Dogberry and Verges rehearsing to have a very high stakes but incredibly straightforward conversation.

WILL: “This is turning out to be a very big day for us on both a personal and professional level.” It’s true for us and it is one of my favorite lines in the show!

“With one ‘we thank you,’ many millions more…”
