The show begins with a new contemporary “framing device”: we meet some of the audience members for whom the story of Katherine and Petruchio is being performed and begin to understand some of their preconceptions about those roles.

Then we enter Renaissance-era Padua, Italy, where newcomer Lucentio falls instantly in love with Bianca, who is already being courted by two locals.  Bianca’s mother Baptista has declared that Bianca’s older sister Katherine must be married first, and the suitors despair of this ever happening, since they disapprove of Katherine’s behavior.  Lucentio disguises himself to secretly woo Bianca, while his servant Tranio “becomes” Lucentio to fulfill his responsibilities.

Meanwhile, another newcomer, Petruchio, agrees to marry Katherine for her dowery, despite her reputation.  Katherine and Petruchio meet, and sparks fly.  Petruchio insists to Baptista that he and Katherine are agreed, and Baptista sets the wedding day over Katherine’s protests.

Bianca’s wooers continue to fight amongst themselves, while she secretly falls in love with the disguised Lucentio.

Petruchio’s behavior at his wedding shocks everyone and persists even after he and Katherine return to his home in Verona.  His ridiculous attempts to negotiate his new relationship continue to fail until the couple is called back to Padua for Bianca’s wedding.  On the road, a chance meeting allows Katherine and Petruchio to enjoy each other for the first time since their initial meeting, and they rediscover their spark.

In Padua, Lucentio and Bianca’s secret courtship is revealed, and a bet between the new husbands provides a chance for Katherine to show her strength, intelligence, and wit when she offers advice to new brides about what a marriage is really about.

Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew features the Induction, a story that frames the main narrative. The original Induction tells the story of "a group of hunting nobleman tricking a drunken tinker named Christopher Sly into believing he is a lord. The noblemen give Sly a disguised young page as his supposed wife.  They entertain him at their house with a play by a group of traveling actors, which is [The Taming of the Shrew]."

Because Christopher Sly's plotline is dropped after Act One, Scene One of the original play, many theaters leave the Induction out of their productions to reduce confusion.

CSC's The Taming of the Shrew begins with a re-imagining of the Induction. Kristina Sly's bachelorette party takes an unexpected turn when her maid of honor, Amy, brings her to The Taming of the Shrew in a last ditch attempt to convince Kristina that marrying her fiancé, Mason, would be a huge mistake. The two women watch the play with the audience.

-Quote sourced from Shakespeare Birthplace Trust

The Taming of the Shrew is often considered to be one of Shakespeare's "problem plays," due to a long history of interpretations of the play that focus attention on its patriarchal language. As such, director Jemma Levy shares how she tackles this controversial play.

“I believe this is a FEMINIST PLAY.  Katherine is equal to, if not superior to, all the men around her, Petruchio included (and isn’t this true of almost every woman – certainly every lead female character – Shakespeare has ever written?). Shakespeare is perfectly capable of writing shrewish characters, and yet Katherine isn’t one.  Petruchio supports, admires and loves her for her intelligence, wit, spunk, and strength.

"The entire story of Katherine and Petruchio is a performance, not just for the regular audience, but also for an onstage audience, in our case Kristina-with-a-K and her best friend Amy.  In other words, our audience is learning not only from the story of Katherine and Petruchio and Bianca and Lucentio and Tranio, but also from watching the reactions of Kristina and Amy.”
