Desirée Roots’ ability to sing nearly every genre of music, including Jazz, Gospel, Opera, and pop has made her one of the region’s most sought-after vocalists. She is Grammy nominated, as well as a regional artist that spreads her talents over theatre, music and dance. She has shared the stage with Grammy Award-winning guitarists Buddy Guy and BB King, saxophonists Gerald Albright and Boney James, was the opening act for Brian McKnight and was a featured vocalist with the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra as well as RVA’s own Richmond Symphony. Her awards include the Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts for “Vocal Excellence in the Commonwealth of Virginia” and a Richmond Theater Critics Circle Award, for “Best Actress in a Musical”. In 2017 Desirée wrote a tribute to Virginia’s Ella Fitzgerald in honor of the 100th anniversary of the legend’s birth. Forever Ella is still performed throughout Virginia. In her many hats she wears, she is a Board Member of Richmond Jazz Society, Inc., an organization dedicated to the education, preservation and advancement of jazz, celebrating 44 years of serving Central Virginia and the region; Artistic Director of Community at Virginia Repertory Theatre and, her most favorite hats - wife and mom!
