When first introduced to the US Constitution in grade school, I didn’t understand it as something that was up for discussion. It was a matter of fact—a case closed. And yet, here we are living in a time when the word “Constitution” seems to be on everyone’s lips. We’re eager for a real conversation—and suddenly, at least for me, this country’s founding document is fully alive.
Heidi’s story, which is so beautifully told on our stage by Annie Funke, is funny, heartfelt, and utterly charming. However, the real power in this play is in its call to action—in the way that it asks us to think for ourselves, to engage in respectful discourse and debate, and to consider what it looks like to strive for a more perfect Union.
Emily Comisar, Executive Artistic Director
Whenever I direct a play, I ask: What does this play have to do with the here, now, today? Never has a play felt more immediate, urgent, and deeply personal to me than this one. What The Constitution Means to Me challenges us to engage in an act of ethical imagination—to envision a world where everyone is included in the promises of the Constitution.
This play asks us to consider: What makes the Constitution personal to us? What does it mean—not in a historical or legal sense, but in the most deeply personal way? With sharp insight, surprising humor, and endearing heart, Heidi Schreck casts a spell on us, revealing the biases and omissions embedded in the document itself, and in the interpretations of it.
More than anything, this play is an invitation—to collective engagement, to action, to seeing one another fully. It asks us to recognize our shared humanity, to find what binds us together, and to practice deep empathy and compassion. Sharing it with an audience, in this exact moment in time, feels incredibly powerful.
I am profoundly grateful to OKC Rep for producing this timely story and to Annie, Harry, Adamari, and AJ—our courageous actors—who are bringing Heidi’s vision of a more inclusive, more equitable future to brilliant life. Thank you for joining us.
