Director's Letter

Welcome Theater Friends,

Thank you so much for joining us for what my inner critic is calling “a delightful and entertaining theater experience.” It has been a great privilege for me to lead this cast in bringing to life this classic tale. I accepted this project with no small amount of trepidation and awareness that audiences have expectations for such an iconic piece of work. I myself am a child of the 90’s that grew up watching Disney classics in theaters, at the drive-in, and on VHS (sometimes repeatedly) so this was a chance to bring that magic and excitement to the stage...or horribly disappoint you, your children, and Mickey Mouse.

As an adult I have come to love hearing different myths, tales, and legends from different cultures around the world. Beauty and the Beast is a story that existed long before Disney and truly is a tale as old as time with roots that date back all the way to the 2nd century. In 1740 Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve wrote "La Belle et La Bête" which became the basis for the story we know today. There have been many adaptations and getting to dig into this story, discuss its roots, and flesh out these characters with my cast was quite of a bit of unexpected fun.

It is easy in today’s culture to focus on the problematic parts of stories we enjoyed in our past and often that scrutiny is how we grow as a society. My goal in directing this show however has been to place the focus on aspects of this story we can almost all relate to. Have you ever felt like you were different from those around you? Have you ever been in a situation that seemed bleak and left you clinging to hope?  Have you ever responded with anger when having to confront the consequences of your own actions?  Are you currently a teapot waiting for a curse to be broken? Then you’re in the right place!

Community Theater means many different things to different people and it never ceases to be a great joy in my life. It takes many dedicated people to bring a show like this to the stage. I could not have done this show without the support of my incredible production team: Aric, Trish, Katherine, Nicole, Tayla, Debbie, Cassie, Chris, Dave, Simone, and George to name just a few. I also want to give a special thank you to Jeff Dunn and Andrea Bingham who entrusted this show to me. Lastly, Community Theater could not exist without audiences like you so thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to be our guest and let us transport you to a small provincial town in Alsace.

Enjoy the Show,

Michael P.M. Calabrese
