Summary

In 1925, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself becomes the attraction when he gets trapped 200 feet underground. Alone but for sporadic contact with the outside world, Floyd fights for his sanity – and, ultimately, his life – as the rescue effort above explodes into the first genuine media circus. Reporters and gawkers from across the country descend on the property, fueling the hysteria and manipulating the nation into holding its collective breath.

This haunting musical, featuring Adam Guettel's glorious folk and bluegrass-inspired score, tells the transcendent tale of a true American dreamer.

History
Floyd Collins premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons on February 9, 1996. Directed by Tina Landau, the production featured Christopher Innvar, Martin Moran, Jason Danieley, Theresa McCarthy, Cass Morgan, Brian d'Arcy James, Matthew Bennett and Michael Mulheren. The musical made its London debut at the Bridewell Theatre in July 1999. Directed by Clive Paget, the production featured Nigel Richards, Anna Francolini, and Craig Parnell. This show will finally come to Broadway later this month at the Lincoln Center with a star-studded cast!

A Note From Ramsey Theatre Company Producing Artistic Director, Diane DiCroce

Welcome to the Ramsey Theatre Company’s production of “Floyd Collins”. Ramsey Theatre Company is SKyPAC’s professional resident theater company producing Broadway-caliber shows. We attract professional artists from around the country as well as our region to bring stories to life on our stage.

This past Fall we presented “Grease”, a salute to 1950s nostalgia and car culture. This coming June, we will take you- and the whole family- on a journey to Oz where Dorothy will discover that “there’s no place like home”.

Ramsey Theatre Company’s home is right here in Bowling Green. And tonight, we are telling the story of the events that happened only 25 miles away. The events that transpired 100 years ago around Floyd Collins' entrapment became the third most publicized and reported national news story of the 20th century. It was the time of the Kentucky Cave Wars, where Floyd Collins, a man who dared to dream, took a chance that would ultimately cost him a great price.

We are proud to offer added ways to experience this story tonight, starting with our pre-show reception and discussion with Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent Barclay Trimble and prominent community member Chris Carmichael, Grandson of H.T. Carmichael. We’d also like to invite you to view our Goodwin Gallery Exhibit on the history of Floyd Collins, curated in partnership with Aviation Heritage Park. This wonderful display includes artifacts from family members of some of the characters that are portrayed in this musical, as well as items on loan from the National Cave Museum, Hidden River Cave, and The National Park Service.

 And that's not all...

After our show this evening, you will have an opportunity to greet our actors in the lobby, as well as participate in a talkback with Roger Brucker, the author of the book, Trapped! The Story of Floyd Collins,  right here in our Rita and Jim Scott Concert Hall.

Please come back for Ramsey Theatre Company’s production of the “Wizard of Oz” this June! And stay tuned for announcements on our shows for next season as well as our Broadway Series offerings. Please be sure to follow and like our Facebook and Instagram pages for the most recent and up-to-date information!

Many thanks to our Broadway Series Sponsor, Greenwood Ford Lincoln, and our "Floyd Collins" sponsors: Kentucky Tourism Arts & Heritage Cabinet, Co-Sponsor: Tristar Greenview Regional Hospital, Set Sponsor: Bank of Edmonson County, and Music Director Sponsor: Tennessee Valley Authority. Special thanks also to Mr. Robert Ramsey for making our dream possible.

And thanks to you, our audience, for supporting live theater and The Ramsey Theatre Company here at the SKyPAC. It’s a place where we can all dare to dream-just like Floyd.
